So, you have decided to dig a little (or a lot) deeper into God’s Word, but you’re not quite sure where to start? Through our years of Bible study, we have discovered and enjoyed so many excellent tools! We want to pass them along to you today in hopes that they will bless you. This is by no means an exhaustive list, but just a few resources that we have found helpful. Do you have some tools that you don’t see on this list? Please feel free to pass them along here in the comments. We’d love to pass them along! In the meantime, may your Bible study be sublime, and may these tools help keep you free above the fray.
For a helpful visual on the ways to interact with God’s Word, we like this “Hand” tool from Navigators:
Need a Bible you can carry on your phone? We love the Bible app by YouVersion. Not only do you find several versions of the entire Bible on this app, but you also can participate in daily, guided prayer, read through the Word through a variety of reading plans, and also connect with other Bible studiers around the globe. To learn more, visit YouVersion here:

One of the reading plans you can find on YouVersion’s Bible app, and that we have really enjoyed through the years is The Bible Recap, founded by Bible enthusiast Tara-Leigh Cobble. She will lead readers through a chronological reading of the New Testament beginning on October 1. If you’d rather wait until January 1, you can join her reading plan that takes you from Genesis to Revelation in one year. We love Tara-Leigh’s approach of looking for God, His plans, and His character in every reading. As she likes to say, “He is where the joy is!”
Perhaps you are less a visual learner and more of an auditory learner. Maybe there are just days when you really want to stay on track, but your schedule just won’t allow you to read God’s Word. Or maybe you would like to read the Bible, and then listen to and meditate upon passages. We think the Dwell audio Bible app is a great tool for that purpose. You can learn more about Dwell by visiting this link.
Yet another excellent resource for reading through God’s Word chronologically is Wendy Pope’s Read Thru the Word chronological Bible reading. Wendy and her teaching team use the New Living Translation’s Chronological Bible to read the entire Word of God in one year. Each reading is accompanied by an instructional video that provides deeper teaching about that day’s passages. The entire group is welcoming, passionate about God’s Word, and eager to help participants feel the same way. You can find out about Wendy’s reading plan here.
Memorizing Scripture is such a life-giving discipline. Memorization hides God’s Word in your heart and mind, allowing you to share it with others in time of need, meditate on it yourself, and even pray it back to God. (And He promises that His Word will never return void.) One tool that we have used and found really helpful is Robert J. Morgan’s book, 100 Bible Verses Everyone Should Know by Heart. You can find this book through your favorite book seller.
Speaking of memorization, we can’t say we have used it, but we were intrigued by this article, “7 EXPERT Tips to UNLOCK your Bible Memory Potential,” which we discovered here. Let us know if any of you have used it and what you think of it!
Finally, we know that reading and studying God’s Word can just feel daunting. If that is how you are feeling, we’d like to suggest a couple of books to help. The first one is The Bible, Simplified: Learn the Story, Live the Story, by Zach Windahl. You can find it and a related study guide here. We also recently learned of Pastor Colin Smith’s new book called Fly Through the Bible: A Brief Introduction. Click the title to learn more. We pray that these resources really assist you as you engage with God’s Word. The Bible is our direct line to God, where we grow in relationship with Him and learn so much about His plan for us in the process. Happy journeys, friends!
